CHAPTER 27

LAURENT: THE SLIGHTED SON OF A HIGH FAE LORD

I paced in the hallway restlessly. How could I stand in this house and not relive every single moment Kade and I had cherished growing up?

As my hand glided on the smooth wooden railing, an instant flood of memories burdened my mind’s eye. I crouched before the handrail. Peering through the balusters, I caught a glimpse of the vestibule and the wide hallway that led to the great hall.

We used to spy from this same spot whenever his parents threw one of their lavish soirees. I remembered one particular Samhain evening. Kade was fourteen, and I was close to catching up with him, as always. We were spying from this hallway as the elite of our world streamed into the castle.

The moment came to me so vividly. I could almost see it play out before my eyes.

I find these events get duller every year, Kade said, ensnared in utter ennui. He straightened and walked a few steps back, dipping his hands into his pants pockets.

I like watching them, I told him. My gaze narrowed on the entrance. There’s Professor Godfrey and his son, I pointed out in awe. The kid’s about our age, yet he’s allowed in the soiree. That last bit came out sounding bitter. And I was. Back then, I couldn’t wait to grow up and take part in those exclusive dinner parties—whereas Kade couldn’t care less about them.

When I looked back over my shoulder, I found Kade watching me. He blinked, snapping out of his detachment, and said, I hear the boy is not actually his.

Oh? I told him, intrigued.

Kade pinched up his black slacks and crouched beside me, forearm casually pressed against the balustrade. He leaned his brow against his arm and looked into the vestibule. His tigerish eyes then angled my way. I hear he’s the slighted son of a mighty high fae lord, he added, giving me a mischievous smirk.

It sounded like a fairytale. The corner of my lips quirked up in disbelief. Kade enjoyed teasing me. He’d often tell me such stories and later amused himself, watching me fall for each word to have sailed through his lips.

But I knew better this time. I sucked at my teeth and shoved him aside with my shoulder, disregarding his ridiculous story.

Kade snickered, delighted. Do you want to play a game?, he suddenly asked, slipping into the gravest expression. His voice, although touched with a hint of gloom, carried such self-assurance and pride it sounded regal. And why wouldn’t it? The Bryson’s were a powerful magical family. His father, Vesely Academy’s headmaster. His mother, a powerful sorceress, and famed author of a dozen grimoires. So, in a way, Kade Bryson truly was royalty. Hell, they even lived in a castle.

I shrugged. I guess, I said, not particularly thrilled. What kind of game?

Come! On a cheerful impulse, Kade grabbed my arm and pulled me down the hallway. He pushed a secret panel on the wall and led me through it.
